Canon EOS Rebel T3i Review

The Canon EOS Rebel T3i (or Canon EOS 600D, as known outside of the US) is the latest addition to Canon’s ever-expanding line of upper entry-level Digital SLR cameras. Following in the footsteps of the previous T2i model, the T3i similarly makes use of an 18.0 Megapixel CMOS sensor and DIGIC4 Image Processor, capturing pretty stunningly clear images for only a fraction of the price of a higher grade DSLR camera. The T3i comes equipped with an EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS type II Lens and sports a foldable tilt and swivel LCD monitor on the back, much like the one on the Canon 60D. It utilizes a changeable SD card to store images and also allows for HD video capturing, with range of useful features for novices and professionals alike.

But do the additional functions of the T3i really justify the creation and sale of an entirely new camera model? Having used the T2i previously, I can say that in terms of image quality the T3i is identical. The onboard sensor and imaging processor are precisely the same as the T2i. As for size, shape and general look, the cameras are also both incredibly similar. The real difference between these two models is noticeable when you start poking around with the software. For example, the T3i has quite a few additional options for processing images, such as the Basic+ function which allows you to apply all kinds of effects to your shots. Also, the LCD monitor folds out and can be adjusted for viewing from all angles. I prefer to take pictures the old-fashioned way, without the use of a monitor, but I must admit that when I have occasionally shot video, the tilt and swivel monitor has come in handy.

Canon EOS Rebel T3i Pros and Cons

On to a review of the pros and cons of this particular model:

Canon EOS Rebel T3i Pros:

  • Image quality. When it comes to clear and rich image capturing, you can only give the T3i an excellent rating.
  • HD video. Again, great image quality and some nice creative options make this a good choice for photographers who want to shoot a bit of video on the side.
  • LCD Monitor. Similar to the older Canon 60D, the adjustable LCD monitor is useful when shooting from various heights and angles, or as a guide for those who prefer to not use the viewfinder.
  • Miscellaneous functions. Though more experienced photographers may not find much use for these extras, they may prove to be invaluable to the novice or first time DSLR owner.

Canon EOS Rebel T3i Cons:

  • Overly similar to T2i. Owners of the previous Canon T2i may want to stay clear of this model. As useful as the added features may be, there really isn’t that much difference between the two cameras.

This is what it seems to come down to. Looking at the camera from the perspective of a previous DSLR owner, to buy a T3i solely for its additional features may not be the way to go; however, evaluating the T3i for what it is: a quality DSLR camera which captures incredibly precise images and with a host of extra features, we can put the T3i at the top of the list of entry-level Digital SLR cameras. So, if you’re new to the game and are looking for your first DSLR or are upgrading from a lesser model, the T3i is certainly a wise choice.

All in all, the Canon EOS Rebel T3i is a welcome addition, though perhaps not entirely necessary, to a series of cameras which were already well established as top of the line for their price range.
